Shaun of the dead Opening scene
Shaun of the dead Opening scene
At the start of this scene we get a direct shot of Shaun staring right into the camera almost breaking the fourth wall, and immediately asserting the main character of the film. The setting is dark and almost depressing. Shaun’s attention is then caught by Lizzie, his girlfriend, as she is talking to him about how she isn’t happy in their relationship and feels like it is being made very difficult by Shaun’s friend, Ed.
This situation is then highlighted by Ed interrupting Lizzie after every sentence further proving this uncomfortable situation in which Shaun is in the middle of, especially with Lizzie’s friends too on the other side, showing how Shaun is trapped between this dilemma of maturing and growing up, or staying the same as in his college years just like Ed. In this scene Lizzie says “I sound like your mother” which inflates the situation and provokes Lizzie’s friends to start asking multiple questions but not letting Shaun form an answer, and then Ed joins in and starts interrupting as the sound in the background gets louder, this gives a sense of stress and and almost being trapped not knowing what to say.
In the opening credits we get a few clips of the setting in which the film will take place in, we see people doing their tasks and jobs almost in a boring and slow paced manner which immediately shows the premises of the movie, but almost suggests that in this town people were already almost zombie like, probably because of the grey and very monochrome, almost sad mood the place has. After the opening credits we see Shaun waking up in a zombie like manner which again, teases the major theme of the movie, and we see that he lives with Ed, who is already up and playing video games, Shaun proceeds to sit down and join him but he is quickly shut down by Ed who tells him he has work that day, this suggests that Shaun isn’t very passionate about his work and again put him in this dilemma between growing up and maturing, or keeping this almost childish behavior that Ed has.
